What is intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment?

Intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment is a level of care for those who have symptoms that do not merit a detoxification or residential program and 24-hour supervision, or have recently completed treatment at a detoxification or residential program. Patients receiving IOP require more intensive treatment and support than traditional outpatient therapy. IOP is an appropriate treatment option for people who still need frequent contact with treatment therapists to manage their risk of relapse by understanding emotional/cognitive processes and building proper coping skills.

This level of care requires fewer treatment hours than partial hospitalization programs (PHP), meeting around 9-12 hours a week, depending on the client's needs, compared to 20-25 or more. Recovia's IOP span 18 sessions of holistic and integrated treatment before the person steps down to a less intensive level of treatment called supportive care. After the IOP phase of treatment has ended, the client is eligible for supportive care to ensure goals achieved within IOP programming are maintained. This part of treatment can last 6-to-10 months.

During intensive outpatient treatment individuals will work with the treatment team to develop a treatment plan catered to the clients needs. Treatment for substance use involves group and individual therapy where various topics are discussed, such as taking steps to identify high risk situations/emotions, adaptive responses to cravings and triggers, relapse prevention, tolerating discomfort, and appropriate self-care behaviors. If needed, medical providers can offer the client medications to help detour relapse while the client is learning different methods of coping.

Recovia's intensive outpatient programs allows clients to live off-site while dedicating a significant amount of time towards their treatment. IOPs offer flexibility for those who are balancing work, school and/or family. Intensive outpatient treatment works best when the client's home environment includes a support system that include family and friends as well as substance-free environment. IOPs are beneficial as a way of obtaining treatment that rapidly increases overall health and a great way to transitioning back into society after the completion of an inpatient treatment program.
